Abstract
As part of the GridLab project we have designed and implemented a flexible grid monitoring system that can be used to monitor grid entities like jobs and resources. In addition to basic information retrieval found in many other monitoring systems our design also offers advanced features: persistent connections, guaranteed data delivery for critical data and support for actuators that influence the state of either the monitored entity or the monitoring system itself. The multi-level layout of the various components makes it possible to generate compound metrics from raw measurements, create arbitrary routing networks or get over firewalls.
