Abstract

This paper introduces two combinatorial optimisation problems arising during the design and operation of multimedia servers. Their efficient solution can enhance significantly the performance of the servers and improve the quality of the provided services. The main issues we focus on are the host recommendation and utility optimisation for multimedia adaptation and we give an overview of the algorithms implemented by ourselves. Our approaches are related to typical problems and solutions in discrete mathematics such as facility location problem, knapsack problem, monotonic optimisation, linear programming and evalutionary algorithms.
